The Students' Association of the Faculty of Arts
About us
You might be wondering who is part of SAFA… Well, if you are a student in one of the many programs in the Faculty of Arts (except communications), then SAFA is YOU! According to our constitution, every student studying within the Faculty is officially a member of ARTS and membership sure does have its privileges. But before we take a look at our benefits and services, let's take a minute to go over the organization as a whole.
The Students’ Association of the Faculty of Arts:
- is a non profit corporation ;
- includes over 5000 members ;
- is the biggest student association at the University of Ottawa (easy to believe, since Arts is also the biggest faculty) ;
- is run by an executive committee of eight members and a board made up of each of our 17 departmental associations’ representatives.
This Board of Directors is responsible of overseeing and directing the business of the association, from the policy decisions to approving the budget. The Executive Committee is elected every year during the winter semester. The eight positions responsible for the association’s daily administration are:
- President ;
- Corporate Secretary ;
- VP Finance ;
- VP Communications, Anglophone ;
- VP Communications, Francophone ;
- VP University Affairs ;
- VP Social Affairs ;
- VP Charities ;
ARTS represents the interests of undergraduate students of the Faculty of Arts within the SFUO, the faculty, the University, the community and the provincial and federal governments. The students’ association also works to foster a sense of community through social and cultural events, while at the same time offering a variety of services to its members.
ARTS SERVICES – By students, for students.
Social Programming – From 101 Week in September all the way to ARTS Ball in March, there is a continuous flow of original activities. Since 2003, in order to allow our departments to shine, Arts Week is planned for the first week of October. * See the « ARTS Events » section for the list. *
Locker rentals – Do you need a place to store your things between classes? Rent a locker in Simard Hall at 10$/semester. For your locker key, we need a 5$ deposit that you will get at the end of the semester upon return of the key. Email lockers@artsuottawa.ca with your questions.
Café Alternatif - SAFA is found in the sub-basement of Simard Hall within the Café Alternatif, our very own ARTS hangout. The Café is newly renovated from the summer of 2008. The Café is also available for reservation to students for various events. It is equipped with a 60" LCD screen, an a/v centre, projector and screen.
Scholarships - SAFA is pleased to be able to offer several scholarships that are open to our members . This year, we will give out over 6000$!
Student Advocacy and Representation– Do you have a problem with a professor? Do you have ideas to improve your program? Feel free to stop by the office! We are your ideal link to the administration and we all have experience in dealing with student politics. We’ll do everything we can to get your issues or concerns heard.
